Re: Directions to Locations (Section, Guide, Category, etc)

That sounds like an excellent idea to me. As long as it's kept short, it can go on the monster's main page, probably under its own header. Longer directions would need a subpage, like how testimonials are kept on the talk page, but I don't expect that to be an issue with most monsters. I can make a new template for it, but I'll need to think on it a bit while I sort out how I want it to look/work. Something similar to {{NM-Notes}}, perhaps... (Apologies for the delay - I'm not as active as I once was and I've been away for the holidays on top of that.) ~ Karuberu (talk) 02:33, January 2, 2013 (UTC)

I have created {{Monster Information}} for use on any monster page that you like. It has a "directions" section, which you can use like the notes section on {{NM-Notes}}. It will also direct people to the talk page for "more detailed directions". Hopefully this will be enough guidance for people both looking-for and planning-to-write long/descriptive directions (just use your judgement, like with testimonials). ~ Karuberu (talk) 22:49, January 23, 2013 (UTC)

The pages will have to be updated manually, unfortunately. Bots aren't generally smart enough to do this kind of work and global changes can only be made if a wiki template is already in use. As for actually using the template - it should go under the monster's table where the "Notes" section currently is (I've edited Stroper Chyme as an example). It's not necessary to update all monsters to use the new template, but you're certainly welcome to change as many as you like.

And you were correct - I left out the directions line on the NM example by accident; it's fixed now. ~ Karuberu (talk) 04:04, January 24, 2013 (UTC)

Well, easy question first: To use the NM version of the template, just use {{Monster Information|NM for the top line of the template; all this does is change the colors a bit. I've changed the Usage section of the template to make this more clear (I need to write a proper usage, but I'm bad about that).

As for monsters that appear in multiple zones, try using level three headers (===Header===) to separate the directions for each zone. So it'd be something like this:

{{Monster Information
| directions =
===West Sarutabaruta===
*Blah blah blah.
===North Gustaberg===
*Blah blah blah blah.
}}

From my testing, it looks pretty decent and doesn't consume too much extra space. It may still take up a lot of space with monsters like River Crabs, but those monsters likely don't have much other information anyway, so it's not really a waste of space. Let me know what you think. ~ Karuberu (talk) 20:16, January 24, 2013 (UTC)

Oh, and I forgot: If you can reduce the directions down to a set of coordinates, you can just put them under the zone name in the table, like this:

|style="padding-left:1ex"|[[West Sarutabaruta]]
:''(D-8), (F-10)''

This is something we've been doing for years, but isn't very wide-spread. It may be another option for mobs like River Crabs. ~ Karuberu (talk) 20:22, January 24, 2013 (UTC)

Yep, I understand what you had/have in mind for the directions section and why it's useful - I just figured I'd let you know about the coordinates thing in case you didn't already know about it. Certainly saves space when specifics aren't needed.

A lot of information on wiki markup can be found on the MediaWiki wiki (MediaWiki is the software that FFXIclopedia and many other wikis run off of). Also check out our Editing Guide and Policies for more FFXIclopedia-specific editing tips and guidelines (these may be somewhat outdated, however, so keep that in mind).

And as far as the ranking system... I think they must have gotten rid of it, because all I've found are dead links. However, you can still find a list of all users/sort by contributions here: Special:ListUsers. ~ Karuberu (talk) 01:58, January 26, 2013 (UTC)

Hi IBHalliwell, i try to have a look in here, can't see what email is used on this thou. Cemalidor (talk) 14:41, August 26, 2013 (UTC)

Hi! :-) I wrote a reply with my email, but then went to send another confirmation. Now my account shows confirmed, yet, I don't see any confirmation email (yet). Maybe someone did it manually or, well, I don't know and don't want to assume. ;-) --IBHalliwell (talk) 20:00, August 26, 2013 (UTC)

Bond Requirement for adventuring fellow quests

Have your personally verified that bond is still required for Picture Perfect? SE said fellow quests no longer require any bond to activate. Simply zone and return and talk to Luto.--Blue Donkey Kong (talk) 22:18, May 20, 2014 (UTC)

Source: "The prerequisites for fellowship quests may now be fulfilled simply by entering Jeuno." [1]

Hello (User talk:Blue Donkey Kong) and thank you for your question.

I read what you're referring to in your message, but my experience does NOT match the way you're reading what Square Enix wrote to users. I'm not sure what they mean, as I'm finding many rerequisites still exist. An example is I had to complete Past Reflections. Why do I feel this is true? Luto Mewrilah wouldn't give me any additional quests regardless of the number of times I tried to increase my bond level. I went to the Rendezvous Point and use my Signal Pearl multiple times but never saw changes (e.g. Tactics Pearl Quest, additional headgear, etc). It was as if the increase of bond level stopped.

The reason I tried to skip Past Reflections was because on Ragnarok, I was unable to find any San D'Orian Tea. While I haven't seen anything new occur once I completed Past Reflections, it is because I haven't had enough time (days / hours) to increase the bond to 35.

BTW, you might want to read my updates to the Talk:Adventuring Fellow on the bond requirements section. At this time:

1) My NPC is at level 50. 2) My Bond level was 30, as I got the Past Reflections quest. I entered Jeuno multiple times during this time and the quest never cleared. 3) Once I was able to get all the items (San D'Orian Tea was the hardest for me, BTW, I was able to complete Past Reflections. 4) I went to the Rendezvous Point and talked to my NPC and also went outside and used the Signal Pearl. 5) Zoning back in I talked to Luto Mewrilah again and there is nothing available. 6) I did the quest A Pose by Any Other Name and thus zoned again several times. 7) I went to Selbina and spoke to Diederik. He wasn't ready to give me the quest. I zoned out into the Dune and back in again and still no quest. My guess at this point my bond level is still under 35, as I meet all the other requirements (NPC at 50 and the A Pose by Any Other Name quest is complete (I have the picture hanging in my mule's Mog house.)

At least the bond being under 35 is how I look at the situation at this time. Once I get the bond up to 35, which should be soon, I'll know. I figure my bond is 33 or so right now. I should be able to get to 35 tomorrow.

Maybe I jumped the gun on updating to the article. Honestly, though, my experience of raising a new NPC from scratch is not matching the idea Square Enix removed all prerequisites for the Fellowship quests. I'm not sure what the sentence means.

QUESTION: Do you have suggestions on how you'd like me to test and/or develop this NPC? It might already be too late, though.

Does this address your concerns? If not, please, let me know. I want to be a positive contributor.

UPDATE: I just got the quest after talking to my NPC at the Rendezvous Point, where I also got the Tactics Pearl Quest for the first time. --IBHalliwell (talk) 02:20, May 21, 2014 (UTC)

Returning, Confused Player

Hello my name is Christopher "Tossme". I have decided to come back to FFXI after a 1 year break. I am 30 years old and work regular work hours 9-5 monday to friday EST. I was wondering if you might be so kind to mentor me back into the game. Possibly teach me some of the new content that i still find confusing. I have dabbled in a bit of abbysea but i wouldn't say i know much about it. Also i own the seekers xpac but i have no clue about whats going on with that place . My character in game has these level 99 currectly BST,BRD,WHM,BLM,PLD,DNC,SCH,SMN. I would be willing to level another job up to 99 if it would mean that i could solo/duo more of the content. I am a very consistant player and can be relied on to assist in any function once i get to know people. If i seem to be the type of person that you might be able to befriend and enjoy this game with please drop me a line. Thanks for taking the time to read this and i hope that you will help mentor me back into this game and in return i can be that "go-to-guy" when ever you need assistance.

I also have all of the voice communication programs available to assist in talking. Typing takes so long when trying to teach someone.

Hello Christopher "Tossme",

First, welcome back! :-)

Second, please, remember to sign your messages both here and on talk pages. Thanks! :-)

Third, while what you'll read next seems to say I'm not your guy - please, read it in a more positive light. Actually, both of us (my Son and I) like helping other people, but we have shortcomings, which prevent us from doing a great job.

Next, I, ah, feel like my helping you -- in some ways -- might be like the blind leading the blind. Why?

I hate to admit my short coming, but neither my Son nor I got into the Abyssea expansion pack. The most we did was get the access to the areas, obtain the maps, and most (not all) of the Veridical Conflux. Only yesterday (and with the help of a new friend) did I get the Caller's Pendant.

As for Treasures of Aht Urhgan, my Son only has base access and I'm about 40% of the way through the mission and we're both still Private Second Class.

I noticed you have eight level 99 jobs, which is a lot more than we have (combined). Our level 99 jobs are:

  1. My Son has a level 99 Dancer with purchased level 99 and above gear and weapons. He is working on Chains of Promathia, as we discovered Monisette won't talk to anyone who hasn't got Sea access. He stopped working on Chains of Promathia at Three Paths (5-3).
  2. I have three jobs at 99 (Summoner, Red Mage, and White Mage), but only Summoner has any level 99 gear and my weapons are still the level 51 elemental staves. All of my other jobs are level 91 and below, with many still at level 1 - ~20.

Only recently with the 11th repeat login campaign did we start playing (or trying to play) every day for some amount of time. These campaigns and their prizes, in turn, got us interested Records of Eminence, Sparks, Reforged Armor, Reives, etc.

I'm not sure why (and would like to know) you picked me to be your mentor, but I would be willing to help you (as much as I can within the bounds of my life and abilities).

One thing I can tell you that I do is read and contribute to this wikia and to the Auction House website. I also read the websites pointed to by the Auction House website, such as Escape, the Wiki, and finally (but not least) the Fantasy XI Database website.

You'll notice (please) all of the links I'm including in this reply. It is something I do not just for the reader, but also for myself. It helps me learn by looking up and linking to the information. Unfortunately, to stay on mission and complete the article, talk, or reply (as in this case), I can't read the entire article. Specifically, I'm thinking of Skirmishes and Reives. (One thing I also find helpful is keeping my browser's (Firefox, Internet Explorer) spell checker up to date with how FFXI spells its many words.

I want to set your exceptions and be honest with you. While we got to Western Adoulin, we still don't know very much about anything there. Honestly, I don't know about Skirmish (I know it exists because of the current server messages), all of the various Reives (and there looks to be a lot of them. IN FACT, my Son and I are also looking for people to help explain Seekers of Adoulin to us and possibly help us, too.

Unfortunately for us, the linkshell we both belong to moved (well the vast majority of the members) moved to Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and some stopped their FINAL FANTASY XI subscriptions.

Fortunately, yesterday the person who helped me get my Caller's Pendant invited me to join his Linkshell. I, of course, accepted. :-)

Again, I'm not trying to turn you off or tell you to go away. We like helping people, but to be honest and fair is the only way to help others and to start any relationship.

BTW, my Son has learning disabilities and doesn't type (hence he doesn't communicate well in FFXI). While I touch type, an infection a decade ago left me permanently disabled.

So, please, let me know how you want to proceed and thank you for thinking of me. :-) --IBHalliwell (talk) 02:59, August 4, 2014 (UTC) (always sign and spell check your work :-) It helps others!! :-) )

Re: What's up with the update you did to "The Beginning" (Mission)?

If you look at Category:Rhapsodies of Vana'diel Missions and The Path Untraveled, you'll notice that the markings change to 1-2-1 and such. I changed it to fit that standard. EtherealMutation (talk) 17:48, August 5, 2015 (UTC)
