Category:Limbus
Limbus is a mysterious dimension that lies between Vana'diel, Promyvion, and Lumoria. It is accessible from the celestial realm of Al'Taieu. Players must navigate areas swarming with foes and collect data for valuable currency used to reforge their Artifact and Relic armor pieces to +4.
Limbus comprises two zones: Temenos and Apollyon. Each zone contains four 'towers' to climb with set objectives per floor. Zone progress is marked by obtaining enough Units by defeating regular monsters to obtain a
card specific to each floor of a tower. Collecting all cards for a zone allows players to claim a Unit bonus, contribute to their realm's progress towards increasing, zone-wide Grace buffs, and increase their individual caps on Unit accumulation.
Units are spent to craft Reforged Artifact Armor +4 and Reforged Relic Armor +4 at a specialized furnace within each zone's lobby.
.
Notorious Monsters roam randomly on floors that when defeated, grant server-wide progress towards improved rewards from openable chests on the subsequent weekly reset. These improved rewards go towards crafting and reforging/augmenting accessories.
How to Enter Limbus
To enter Limbus areas, you must complete Chapter 8 of Chains of Promathia. Players must also obtain the
"Scintillating Rhapsody" from completing all Rhapsodies of Vana'diel Missions.
Challenging either tower requires a permanent key item specific to that zone. All party members must possess all needed key items to enter their corresponding Limbus zone. Possessing either card from before the June 2025 Version Update will convert them into permanent key items, and they do not need to be re-acquired. Players who do not possess the needed key items will not be permitted into Apollyon, and be ejected from Temenos after 15 seconds.
You may enter Limbus solo or in a party. Up to three trusts may be summoned within Limbus zones. As of the June 2025 Version Update, any number of parties may now inhabit Temenos or Apollyon, and there is no time limit once inside.
Temenos Entry
Apollyon Entry
All players must obtain a
Black Card in one of the following ways:
- Examine the ??? in Al'Taieu (D-8)
- Examine the ??? in Al'Taieu (L-8)
- Defeat Aw'euvhi after entering Al'Taieu from the Dimensional Portal at the Crag of Dem
- Defeat Aw'euvhi after entering Al'Taieu from the Dimensional Portal at the Crag of Mea
Enter Apollyon via the Swirling Vortex either at Al'Taieu (E-6) or Al'Taieu (K-6)
The Lobby
Each Lobby has a few major points of interest.
The Operator
Operators are Spheroid NPCs who handle content difficulty settings, give various information about the player's current progress, and offer various explanations
- Temenos: Temenos Operator
- Apollyon: Apollyon Operator
Speak with the Operator for a run-down of the content flow and, most importantly, to set your current difficulty level. Players may set the levels of the monsters inside either zone independently from 119 to 135. The difficulty level modulates enemy levels inside the towers and sets the base Units earned for clearing floor objectives.
Operators will also tell you how long remains until the tabulation of increased coffer rewards for defeating Notorious Monsters.
The Furnace
The Furnaces are where players spend their Units to reforge their Artifact and Relic Equipment.
- Temenos: Temenos Furnace. Upgrades Reforged Relic equipment to +4
- Apollyon: Apollyon Furnace. Upgrades Reforged Artifact equipment to +4
The Furnace is where players may upgrade their equipment. Unlike previous reforging processes, there is no wait to receive your completed piece. The upgraded piece is yours as soon as you've paid your fee in Units.
The Entrances
Once players have met all requirements and selected a content difficulty they may interact with an entrance.
- Temenos: Matter Diffusion Module
- Apollyon: Swirling Vortex
Players may enter any tower at any floor. Apollyon additionally has a Radiant Aureole, which acts as an exit back out to Al'Taieu.
Apollyon Areas
Temenos Areas
Objectives
The flow of battle is very straightforward
- Gather data from each tower until you obtain a data card temporary item, then use the exit from each floor to change to another floor, or return to the entrance.
- Use all your collected data cards to open a chest
- Optional: Find or force the spawn of a "???" ground target for bonus points.
The upper-left corner of your screen will tell you what tower and floor you're on, and keep track of your total current collected data remaining before you obtain a data card. You may only hold one data card per floor, but you may continue refilling the bar for a reduced Unit reward.
Gather Data
Gathering data is as simple as defeating monsters within each floor until you have filled the bar displayed in the upper left corner of your screen for that floor.
- Temenos: provides Temenos White Data Cards. There are 25 in total.
- Apollyon: provides Apollyon Black Data Cards. There are 18 in total.
- Earned temporary items stay in your temporary item storage until used to open a chest, even if you leave and re-enter Limbus.
- Clearing a floor objective at enemy level 119 grants 60 Units.[1]
- Clearing a floor objective at enemy level 130 grants 170 Units.[2]
- Clearing a floor objective at enemy level 135 grants 308 Units.[3]
- Point rewards increase by 10 points every additional monster level. Floor progress is preserved unless you completely exit the zone, or increase your enemy level.[4]
- Clearing any floor objective a second time once you have earned the data card grants you half the points of your first clear (e.g. 30 at enemy level 119, 85 at enemy level 130)[5]
- KO'd players earn no objective progress.[6]
- Floor progress scales down with alliances. The larger the player count in an alliance, the more enemies that must be defeated before your bars are full.[7]
- In a group where enemy level settings are mixed, progress is granted based on the level setting of the player who first acted on an enemy.[8]
Defeat Notorious Monsters
As of the September 2025 Version Update, new Notorious Monsters now roam the various areas of Limbus. Each is functionally a Hydra Corps enemy similar to those found in Dynamis and Dynamis - Divergence, with access to abilities of that family such as Carnal Nightmare and with full, at-will access to weapon skills and SP abilities of their respective jobs. It will take a balanced and determined group of players to take down these dangerous foes.
- There are a total of 22 different Notorious Monsters in each area of Limbus, one for each job in the game.
- Only four Notorious Monsters will spawn every 24 Earth Hours.
- Notorious Monsters are unaffected by the current level setting of the adventurers who engage it.
- Defeating these Notorious Monsters adds to a server-wide tally that improves the rewards gained from Chests you open the following week.
- Anybody may engage with these Notorious Monsters, they are not exclusive-claimed to the party or player who initially engaged it.
- Notorious Monsters in Limgus are not aggressive, and do not recover HP normally outside of combat.
- Defeating Notorious Monsters only contribute to improved chest rewards for the zones they inhabit. Apollyon NMs only upgrade Apollyon Chest rewards. The count of Notorious Monsters is tabulated over the course of a four week period, and realms that meet the minimum threshold will upgrade the available chests in Limbus (they change from brown to blue) to contain fistfuls of Alabaster Matter in Temenos and Murky Matter in Apollyon

Enemy Behavior in Limbus
Monster levels are set to 150 until a player performs an action against it, at which point its level is adjusted to that player's current difficulty setting.[9] This has some strange effects, like causing debuffs (including sleep, dia, silence, and chain bind from Scholar Immanence spells[10]) to instantly wear.[11] This can yield unexpected results when pulling or trying to re-sleep enemies when trying to leave a floor. Exercise caution.
All enemies in limbus, including Notorious Monsters[12], take 50% reduced damage from all sources[13], and 99% reduced damage from area of effect damage.[14]. Enemies are immune to Doom effects.[15]
All normal monsters respawn in 1 minute.
Monsters obey expected patterns of detection, linking, and aggression. Notably:
- Euvhi are non-aggressive unless opened up.
- Ghrah are true-sound when in any form except an orb.
- Taurus and Imps are true-sight
- Charmable monster families are still charmable.[16]
Monsters obey expected resistance patterns. Notably:
- Ghrah resistances vary with the color of their cores. White core ghrah and white Pixies resist light-based sleep (Lullaby), etc.
- Adamantoises are immune to Sleep and Lullaby.
Open Chests
When in possession of all the data cards for a zone, players may open a chest on the final floor of any tower for their rewards:
- Units corresponding to the zone
- Fistfuls of Alabaster Matter in Temenos, or Murky Matter in Apollyon from chests that have been upgraded as a result of defeating sufficient Notorious monster since the last 4-week tabulation period.
- Increase the total Units a player may hold (up to a maximum of
)
Bonus Points
Each area has a chance to spawn a Notorious Monster that when defated, leaves a "???" on the ground for three Earth days.[17] Interacting with this "???" gives anybody in the same realm 3,000 bonus Units. After three days, it disappears and the NM respawns.
- The NM will have the same name as any other monster for that floor, but instead of responding to /check with the difficulty level, will be "Impossible to Gauge"
Rewards
Defeated enemies provide EXP, Capacity Points, and Exemplar Points depending on their current level.
Opening a chest requires every single Temporary Item, all of which are immediately lost and must be re-acquired to open a chest again.
Chests grant 3,000 or (rarely) 5,000 Units when opened. Opening a chest for the first time in either zone grants a permanent Key Item that unlocks equipment reforging. A week after NMs have been defeated in a zone, Chests will upgrade their rewards to occasionally include Alabaster Matter in Temenos and Murky Matter in Apollyon. If a player is claiming an upgraded reward for the first time, the acquisition of matter is guaranteed.
- Temenos:
Temenos verification key. Unlocks reforging of Relic equipment. - Apollyon:
Apollyon verification key. Unlocks reforging of Artifact equipment.
Temenos Units may be used to craft pieces of Reforged Relic Armor +4 at the Temenos Furnace.
Apollyon Units may be used to craft pieces of Reforged Artifact Armor +4 at the Apollyon Furnace.
Players are initially limited to holding 30,000 Units from either zone per week. This value increases by 3,000 each time a player opens a chest. Players have a soft total cap of 50,000 units per zone they may earn per week. Points left unearned below this cap carry over and are added to the next week's cap, up to a hard total cap of 100,000 units per zone. Consult the Operator for your current limits.
Players are limited to 'collecting data' (opening chests) five total times per week.
Augmentable Rewards
Cost: One fistful of Alabaster Matter at the Temenos Furnace:
Cost: One fistful of Murky Matter at the Apollyon Furnace:
Each of the four items purchased with matter may be Augmented to Rank 30. Each rank requires one piece of corresponding matter and a fee of corresponding units

Reforging Costs
The Furnace requires a payment of either Temenos (Relic) or Apollyon (Artifact) units depending on the armor slot
- Head: 20,000
- Body: 30,000
- Hands: 15,000
- Legs: 25,000
- Feet: 10,000
Total for 5 pieces: 100,000 Units
Grace
Grace buffs are unique to Temenos and act very similarly to Atma. Players may have up to three active Grace buffs when inside of Limbus zones, and each is unlocked independently via permanent key items.
Delineated Grace: Open a treasure chest in Temenos after receiving your
Temenos verification key.
Angelic Grace: Open a treasure chest in Apollyon after receiving your
Apollyon verification key.
Vital Grace: Open a treasure chest in either zone while in possession of the other two key items
Effects of Grace
Grace potency varies with the total amount of data (aka, sum of Units) collected by players in a realm, and players with active Grace buffs may check their potency by speaking with an Operator. These status benefits do not wear off, can not be dispelled and are always active while in Limbus areas.
- Delineated Grace: Increases Accuracy, Ranged Accuracy, and Magic Accuracy. Minimum value: 8. Maximum value:

- Angelic Grace: Increases all base stats (STR, DEX, VIT, AGI, INT, MND, CHR). Minimum value: 4. Maximum value:

- Vital Grace: Increase Maximum HP, reduces EXP and Exemplar Point loss when KO'd. Minimum value:
. Maximum value:
Map Gallery
Work in progress, only Temenos Central seems to flummox new players, so here is a modified set of maps. The Chest on Temenos Central F4 is in the large, square central room where the beastmen kings used to be. All the old Limbus maps are valid, but some shuffling has occured and many of the clean versions of community maps are lost to the sands of link rot.

The remainder of Temenos maps are basically horseshoe-shaped.
Apollyon towers feature no dead ends or branching paths, the exits are seldom more than a minute's walk from the entrance.
Derivations
Limbus is the Latin word for Limbo, meaning "edge" or "boundary".
Limbo is a word used in general for being stuck with nowhere to go until something else happens, but it has its origins with Christian belief (Roman Catholic exclusively). In Catholic legend, Limbo is a realm where the virtuous humans who died before the resurrection of Jesus Christ reside and where unbaptised infants who die reside. This is the realm where souls exist which cannot go to Hell for they have committed no sins or lived virtuous lives, but they cannot go to Heaven because they are not a part of the Catholic faith. There are names for each of the 2 Limbos: Limbus Patrum (Limbo of the Fathers, where the virtuous Pagans reside) and Limbus Infantium (Limbo of the Children, where unbaptised infants reside). It is not a part of official doctrine (unlike Purgatory). In Medieval literature, specifically Dante's Divine Comedy, Limbo is the First Circle of Hell.
