Details
Avatars can be fought in three different ways: the level 20 solo battles, the party-sized Prime Avatar battles or the alliance-sized battles featured in the quest Waking the Beast. The six "basic" avatars Ifrit, Leviathan, Ramuh, Titan, Garuda and Shiva can be obtained from both the solo and party battles, while Fenrir and Diabolos can only be obtained from uncapped quests with special requirements.
Requirements
The requirements for entering vary from quest to quest. Here is a short list:
- Trial Size (level 20) battles:
- Summoner level 15+;
- A 2nd level of fame in the city where the quest starter is located.
- (Edit: by Wolf shadow123) there is a level 20 cap and a 15 minute time limit to these quests.
- "Trial by..." (uncapped, party sized) battles:
- Level ???
- A reasonably high level of fame in the city where the quest starter is located.
- Level ???
- The Moonlit Path (Fenrir battle):
- Possession of all six Whispers, obtained from the "Trial by..." quests (first time only);
- A high(?) level of Windurst fame.
- Waking Dreams (Diabolos battle):
- Chains of Promathia Chapter 4;
- A high(?) level of Windurst fame.
- Waking the Beast (uncapped, alliance sized):
Solo Battles
These battles are capped at level 20, and you can only enter as Summoner main job. For these battles, you do not need to travel to the location of the battle all alone. The quest starter will warp you to the location of the protocrystal. In addition, you will receive a Scroll of Instant Warp upon defeating the avatar.

Prime Battles
Upon defeating the Prime avatars in the "Trial by" quests, you will receive a Whisper Key Item corresponding to the element of the avatar. These can either be kept for The Moonlit Path or exchanged with the quest starter for one of the rewards listed. The rewards are always: pact with the avatar, an amount of gil, a rare/ex item for use in the quest Mama Mia (with the exception of Waking Dreams), a weapon or a piece of equipment.

Waking the Beast
In this quest you face all avatars encountered in the "Trial by..." quests in a much stronger incarnation. Instead of receiving a key item to exchange for a reward of your choice, items may randomly drop at the end of the final battle. In addition, everyone will receive a Carbuncle's Pole upon finishing the quest. Possible drops are listed below.
