Party setup that generally uses 4-5 Black Mage's casting simultaneously on a single enemy, followed with sleeping the monster being attacked. Repeated and well casting time of elemental magic and sleep is repeated until the monster is killed. Called a Manaburn because the method of damaging/sleeping/healing/etc is entirely dependent on Magic, and therefore depending on Magic or Mana Points (MP).
There are 2 general setups.
1: Full Manaburn
- 5x Black Mage, 1x Red Mage or Bard
This tactic involves 5 Black Mage's casting simultaneously, then having the Red Mage cast Sleep or Bard cast Lullaby. The Red Mage or Bard will refresh the MP of the Black Mages at all times using either Refresh or Ballad.
2: Partial Manaburn
- 4x Black Mage, 1x Red Mage, 1x Bard
This tactic works in a similar way as the Full setup, however it is a slower and generally safer approach. Death of a monster takes more spells due to only 4 Black Mage's, however the Red Mage and Bard can heal a total of 6 MP per 3 second, and can both use a form of Sleep to ensure the monster is asleep even if a resist occurs.
The other setup is what I like to call a Pseudo-Manaburn, it is not a generally common setup, but very effective when chaining T and VT versus fighting IT.
3: Pseudo-Manaburn
- 1x Warrior, Monk, Samurai or other heavy melee, 4-5x Black Mage, (optional) 1x White Mage, Red Mage, or Bard
This setup is not a true manaburn, because there exists damage coming from a melee. Also, the use of Sleep is not neccesary, nor a MP recovery method. This method involves both a tanking and pulling melee job, that dishes heavy damage to the enemy along with the Black Mage's. a Heavy Melee, preferably Warrior, acts as tank because the traditional tanking jobs cannot usually generate enough Enmity on their own, while a damage class can dish out high damage also to keep the monster targeting them. The Black Mage's or support job will act as healer, and one may be a refresher if possible. Damage must be done at a very rapid rate by all members, in order to kill the monster before the tank/melee suffers high damage. The basic concept is extremely rapid kills, that reduce downtime by the sheer fact that damage is minimized on the tank by killing the monster.
