In the Matter of France, Maugris or Maugis (Italian: Malagigi, Malagi) was one of the heroes of the chansons de geste and romances of chivalry that tell of the legendary court of King Charlemagne. He is cousin to Renaud (Italian: Rinaldo) de Montauban, son of Beuves of Aygremont and brother to Vivien de Monbranc. Brought up by Oriande the fairy, he became a great enchanter. He won the magical horse Bayard and the sword Froberge (Italian: Fusberta, Frusberta), which he later gave to Renaud.
