Pelte refers to the small round targes carried by the peltasts. The peltasts were light infantryman of ancient Greece, probably originating from Thrace in the 5th century BC. They carried a large shield, short sword, and spear but wore no body armor. They would become the standard model for all Greek armies over the next several hundred years.
