Academic fencing or Mensur is the traditional kind of fencing practiced by some student corporations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and recently to a minor extent in Latvia and Flanders as well. The épée is the modern derivative of the original duelling sword, the rapier, used in sport fencing. Épée is French for "sword".
