Historical Background
Gnat is a word used to refer to any very small insects belonging to order Diptera (true flies, possessing 2 wings, as opposed to other flies [ mayflies, damselflies, dragonflies ]) though is the common name for certain families in suborder Nematocera, specifically Anisopodidae, Mycetophilidae, and Sciaridae. For reference, the other families in Nematocera include mosquitoes, midges, black flies, and crane flies.
