Historical Background
Diplopod is an alternate name for a millipede. Diplopoda is the name for the Arthropod class for Millipedes. They are not arachnids, nor are they insects, though they are closely related to insects. Diplopod is Greek for "doubled feet". How a millipede refers to a Scorpion isn't clear. A centipede would be more appropriate, since they are predatory and venomous. Millipedes are detritivores (eat decaying matter) and are not venomous; they do secrete hydrogen cyanide as a deterrent, however.
