Background Info

Balayang was the brother of the Australian Kulin people's creator deity, Bunjil the eaglehawk. He refused to come live with Bunjil when he was asked, so the angry Bunjil sent 2 bird helpers to punish him. They burnt the lands around him, turning him black (Wikipedia).
